In bad news for the US, Israel, Micronesia and the UN, Bolton submitted his resignation to Bush.
President Bush has accepted the resignation of U.N. Ambassador John Bolton when his recess appointment expires. Mr. Bolton's nomination has languished in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for more than a year, blocked by Democrats and several Republicans.Although Mr. Bush couldn't give Mr. Bolton another recess appointment, the White House was believed to be exploring other ways of keeping him in the job, perhaps by giving him a title other than ambassador. But Mr. Bolton informed the White House he intended to leave when his current appointment expires, White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said. Mr. Bush planned to meet with Bolton and his wife later Monday in the Oval Office.
It is too bad. Bolton was an advocate for the US in a way that few are. He wasn't afraid to stand up to other countries, and the forces in this country who were defeatists and Kerryesque. We will miss his bluntness, his honesty, and his hard work for his country.
